A Wildlife Haven…

Despite it being a cloudy and humid day
I took a walk around Greenstead Slopes
to see what flora and fauna I could find.

As you can see, the tall grasses
are a haven for wildlife
no matter what the weather.

Tree Planting…

A very big
THANK YOU
to everyone who came along
to help plant the new saplings
which were given to us by
The Woodland Trust.

Despite the grey weather,
and the fact it was Easter weekend,
it was a great turn-out.
So good to see so many
local people getting involved.

Another big THANK YOU
to the anonymous donor
who paid for the tree protectors
and canes.

This little copse is adjacent
to Ghost Wood and will
enhance the local area
by adding some colour,
and it will encourage
birds and wildlife.

DSCN0016

It will also provide
a shady area for families
to enjoy picnics,
while still allowing
plenty of green space
for children to run around on.

The project has the backing of
Colchester Borough Council
and local Counsellors.

Snowdrops…

Picture 053

We appear to have a few

pretty little snowdrops

dotted around the slopes.

In Ghost Woods

the fabulous Silver Birches

look rather splendid

against the blue sky.

The trees are full

of chirping birds.

While the trees display oranges and reds
there are many other colours
to be found if you look down.

Summer Sunshine…

Picture 008

Picture 017

It’s the first of August and the slopes are positively buzzing with a million,

no a BILLION, grasshoppers!

The wildlife currently in the woods and on the slopes is amazing.

In just one hour I saw dozens of different types of butterflies

along with a variety of bees.

This is what a ‘proper’ meadow should look like – tall grasses full of thistles,

clover and a vast array of plants I don’t happen to know the names of,

along with mowed areas for people to enjoy the open spaces

with a picnic or simply sunbathing on a summer’s day.

We’re extremely lucky to have such a wonderful area right on our doorsteps

to enjoy whenever we want to.

Long may it continue to be as fabulous as it is right now…

If You Go Down To The (Award Winning) Woods Today…

….you’ll be amazed at how many birds you see and hear!

DSCN0014

DSCN0006

I spotted robins, magpies, blue tits and pigeons but I could hear

literally dozens of other species. This really is a very special haven for wildlife

and we must do all we possibly can to preserve it so that everyone can enjoy it.
